Surrey release Saker and Clinton

Clinton and Saker will be looking for new contracts elsewhere

Surrey have announced that they will not be renewing the contracts of bowler Neil Saker or batsman Richard Clinton.

But it was better news for quick bowler Stuart Meaker, who has been offered a two-year extension to his deal.

Surrey's managing director Gus Mackay said: "We faced an extremely difficult choice, you have to do what you think is best for the squad going forward.

"They can now pursue better opportunities elsewhere and we can focus on getting our squad right."

Saker, 24, joined Surrey in 2003 and played in 18 matches for the club, and Clinton, 27, came to prominence in 2004 when he was called into the side to open the batting against Worcestershire.

He made 73 on his debut and went on to play 23 first-class matches.

Meaker, 19, made his debut for the Brown Caps during the summer and says he is ecstatic to have been handed a contract extension after what he believes was an erratic season.

"I'm over the moon to be honest," he said.

"Last year I had the one year and I still had plans to go to university if things hadn't gone so well and I didn't get that extra extension, but I was absolutely ecstatic.

"It was great to get the first class debut out of the way, earlier on in the season, but the way my season went after that it was very up and down."
