Zaheer quits The Oval
Zaheer Khan
Zaheer hopes to attend an Indian training camp next week
Indian Test star Zaheer Khan has parted company with Surrey after deciding he was not fit enough to play in their Championship game with Gloucestershire.

Zaheer joined the club last month as cover for injured Saqlain Mushtaq, but had to play as an unpaid amateur because he did not have a work visa.

He took two wickets in his opening over in a Totesport League game against Essex at The Oval.

But he is still troubled by a hamstring problem and has decided to return home.

Zaheer limped off the field during a Test match against Pakistan in March, having suffered a similar injury problem during the winter tour to Australia.

He planned to use his spell with Surrey to sharpen up ahead of next month's Asia Cup tournament.

But a club spokesman said Zaheer had told coach Steve Rixon he was still not 100% fit and did not feel he could either himself or the team justice against Gloucestershire.

Spin bowler Saqlain is currently out of action with a knee problem and Surrey are looking around for alternatives.
