Langer was out for 15 in the final

Somerset captain Justin Langer said he was proud of his side despite their 63-run loss to Sussex in the Twenty20 Cup.

The Cidermen, champions in 2005, were bowled out for 109 in reply to Sussex's 172 at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Langer told BBC Sport: "We've done really well in all the competitions this year, we've improved on last season, so I'm proud of that.

"Sussex have also gone close in other competitions and they probably deserved to win here, so hats off to them."

The former Australia opener added: "It's been great fun, something I've never experienced before.

"It was a really good for everyone involved, an excellent showcase for Twenty20 cricket."

Sussex were inspired by a blistering 26-ball 59 from former West Indies international Dwayne Smith, with Langer praising the all-rounder's contribution.

"It was brilliant," said the Somerset captain. "He's a brilliant athlete and an excellent cricketer, who had a great game.

"When someone hits the ball has hard and as far as he does, then you can't do much about it."

While acknowledging Smith's excellence, Langer said that Somerset did not perform to the best of their ability.

"It's irrelevant how well we played in the first game [the seven-wicket semi-final win over Kent], but we were nowhere near as good as that," he said.

"We didn't play very well all round, and they probably got a few too many runs.

"The game was slightly different under the lights and the ball spins a bit, but they definitely played better than us."

Somerset's consolation for missing out on the trophy is a place in the inaugural Twenty20 Champions League, which we be held in India in October.

But Langer said he has not allowed himself to think ahead to the lucrative tournament.

"It seems like it's going to be a huge event, but I've hardly thought about it," said the Western Australian.

"We haven't spoken about it once, but I suppose we can start thinking about it now.

"It's obviously disappointing to lose but maybe being a part of the Champions League will soften the blow.

"I'm sure there's guys in our team who will be keen to have an impact on that tournament and it will be good to test them under pressure in India."
