Somerset will need Langer to score heavily at the top of the order |
New captain Justin Langer has predicted a "memorable" season for the club and its supporters in 2007. Australian Langer, who retired from Test cricket after the recent Ashes series, will be available for the entire summer.
"Last year we were basically bottom of the tree," he told the club's website.
"But I believe with the leadership of coach Andy Hurry and the senior players we can leaving a lasting impression on this upcoming season."
Somerset endured a miserable year in 2006, finishing bottom of Championship Division Two and seventh in the lower tier in the NatWest Pro40 competition.
Langer's short spell at Taunton was one of the highlights, however, and he set a new county record by scoring 342 against Surrey at Guildford in July.
"My six weeks at Somerset last summer sealed the deal for me to return this year. I loved the people and the county," he said.
Langer acknowledges, however, that it will take a change of approach from everyone to bring success back to the County Ground.
"We have a talented group of players and a strong support staff who want to make a difference for all our supporters this year.
"We know it is going to take a lot of hard work and that in many ways we have to tighten up our attitude and commitment to excellence in all aspects of our games."
But he added: "I have great belief in this group as we have an exciting blend of youth and experience and I am confident this year can be a memorable one for all involved."
