 Langer replaces Cameron White as Somerset captain |
Australia batsman Justin Langer, who has announced he will retire from Test cricket after the final Ashes Test, will captain Somerset next season. Langer, 36, has signed a contract for the 2007 season but is considering playing in 2008 as well.
He had a successful five-week spell at the Division Two side last season, including scoring a career-best 342.
"We are absolutely delighted Justin is coming back as captain," said Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose.
"Over the last four seasons Somerset have lacked consistent leadership and this is what we expect Justin to bring especially after his vast experience in Test match cricket and as captain of Western Australia," Rose added.
"His presence and influence on the side will boost our experienced players as well as helping us develop the younger players that we have on the staff."
Langer announced ahead of the Sydney Test he would be quitting international cricket after 105 Test matches.
Last season, fellow Aussie Cameron White captained Somerset, who finished bottom of Division Two of the County Championship.
