ICC World Cricket League Division One: Scotland 235-9 (49.5 overs) beat Netherlands 234-6 (50 overs) by one run Match scorecard
Lyons scored the vital winning run in the Netherlands |
Scotland claimed a thrilling one-wicket win over hosts Netherlands to begin their ICC World Cricket League Division One campaign in Amstelveen on a high. Needing eight from the final over, and with just a wicket in hand, the Scots rode their luck after Gordon Drummond was dropped off the penultimate ball. Last-man Ross Lyons needed to get two from the final ball. But Mark Jonkman's leg-side wide allowed the batsman to scramble the extra, match-winning, 235th run. Drummond had earlier returned figures of two for 27 as the Dutch posted 234 for six on the back of Australian-born right hander Tom Cooper's 87. Scotland's top order wobbled in pursuit and, at 86 for five, had looked on course for defeat before Moneeb Iqbal's steadying 63 from 92 balls. But, when Jonkman pinned Moneeb on the crease 10 shy of the target, and then number 10 Gordon Goudie was run out without facing a ball in the next over, Scotland again looked like they would fall short. Drummond proved to be the match-winner, though, as his unbeaten 33 from 32 balls proved decisive, albeit with the aid of some costly Dutch mistakes. Scotland's second game is against Canada at the same venue on Saturday.
