Quadrangular series, Dublin: West Indies 165-6 (29.5 ovs) bt Scotland 152-7 (30 ovs) by 4 wkts(D/L method) Even languid Gayle must have had some anxiety as wickets fell |
West Indies survived a dramatic collapse to scrape a four-wicket win over Scotland with one ball to spare in a rain-hit quadrangular series contest.
Scotland's innings was twice halted and when they resumed after 26.2 overs their innings had been cut to 30 overs.
They mustered 152-7, with the Windies target revised to 165 accordingly.
Chris Gayle's side looked set to cruise only to lose five wickets for 13 in under three overs, but the skipper held out with three sixes in 85 in 94 balls.
It was very nearly a memorable result for the Scots who were bowled out for 68 in their only other international against the Windies at the 1999 World Cup.
And afterwards Gayle said: "We left out a really good batsman in [Shiv] Chanderpaul to give the young guys a taste of international cricket and to see what they could do.
"I stressed to them before the game about taking individual responsibility and
some of them did not play shots according to the conditions.
"But they have got to learn from this and we've got to give Scotland a lot of
credit.
"They bowled to the conditions and it was very difficult to get the slower
bowlers away."
Gayle chose to field first in the overcast conditions but only 15 balls were possible before the first of the interruptions for rain.
Following a two-hour delay Daren Powell took wickets in consecutive overs.
But Hampshire's new recruit was then smashed for 15 in an over by Navdeep Poonia and Ryan Watson.
The rain then returned and when it finally relented the Scots were suddenly left with less than fours overs in their innings.
Neil McCallum hit successive fours off Darren Sammy and struck four boundaries in total in a brisk 27 before becoming Powell's third victim.
Gayle quickly gave his team momentum with three fours in an over from John Blain as the 50 came up in the ninth over.
But with 11 overs left 71 were still needed and Devon Smith top-edged Majid Haq to slip for 32 from 49 balls.
Runako Morton tried to guide down to third man and was beaten by a quicker one from Haq, who then dismissed Lendl Simmons next ball when the Trinidad and Tobago batsman tried a similar stroke and got an inside edge into his stumps.
Dwayne Smith proved he was not fazed by the hat-trick ball and hammered it over long-off for six, but in the next over he gave a simple return catch to Watson.
Gayle could only look on as two more wickets fell in each of the next two overs but the powerful left-hander smashed Blain over long-off for his third six.
Nine were needed from the final over and Sammy smashed the second ball to the cover boundary and flicked the next through mid-wicket for three to allow an enthralling game to be won with two singles.
