Scotland skipper Craig Wright celebrates in Sharjah

Scotland clinched the inaugural ICC Intercontinental Cup with a resounding victory over Canada by an innings and 84 runs in the final in Sharjah.

Openers John Blain and Asim Butt took four wickets each to cut Canada, 177 behind on first innings, down to 24-8.

Last wicket pair Umar Bhatti (41) and Ashish Patel (25) shared a stand of 67, Canada succumbing for 93.

Scotland, 180-3 overnight, declared on 287-8 with Gavin Hamilton (115) completing his second first-class ton.

The tournament marked the first time associate member countries have competed in a three-day format.

But the final was completed a day early as Scotland's bowlers proved themselves a class apart, Monday's showing following a similar display in the first innings, when Canada were bowled out for 110.

Hamilton, who spent four hours at the crease, hitting 11 boundaries, shared a fourth-wicket stand of 118 with Ryan Watson, who made 56.

Both men fell to Bhatti, with Watson the first of three dismissals in a single over for the Pakistan-born left-armer.

With a resounding win, Scotland captain Craig Wright believes his team have strengthened their claim as the best team below Test level.

"We played fantastic cricket over five days, first over Kenya and then over Canada," he said.

"We want to prove we are the strongest associate member country and a win in emphatic style sends a strong message."

Canada captain Ian Billcliff said: "We worked hard to get to the final, but congratulations to Scotland, who played well.
