Jayasuriya's hopes of playing in Scotland came to nothing |
The Scottish Saltires are unlikely to sign any big name overseas players for the 2005 Totesport League campaign. Captain Craig Wright told BBC Sport that three or four stars, including Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya, had been sounded out.
But he said it was "unlikely" any of their inquiries would be followed up.
Wright added that because Scotland will also be playing in the ICC Trophy, with World Cup places at stake, homegrown players needed extra opportunities.
The Saltires may, however, look to use Pakistani all-rounder Yasir Arafat again.
Arafat, the Clydesdale club pro since 2001, played 15 Totesport Division Two games last summer, scoring 218 runs and taking 22 wickets.
Former Sri Lanka captain Jayasuriya expressed an interest in turning out for the Saltires last October.
"It would be a nice experience if the deal comes through because I have never played in the UK," he was quoted as saying.
"I have been so busy at international level that despite several offers from counties I could not spare the time to play."
But it now looks certain he will not be given the chance to emulate Indian Test star Rahul Dravid, who turned out for the Salties in their debut season.
