Middlesex wait for new head coach

Middlesex will wait until the end of the season before appointing a new first-team coach.

Toby Radford resigned from the position on Saturday because his role had altered under a restructuring.

Managing director of cricket Angus Fraser told BBC London 94.9: "Richard Scott will be doing that (coaching the team) until the end of the season.

"We'll then re-evaluate, advertise the position and I've told Richard to apply because he is a candidate."

Fraser added: "Richard Scott has been acting as the second 11 coach and has been on the staff for two or three years now."

Scott, 45, played 72 first-class and 97 one-day matches for Hampshire and Gloucestershire in a 10-year career.

"We've got a new captain this year in Shaun Udal, last year Ed Joyce was captain of the club and I think Ed was happy to hand a lot of the team affairs over to Toby," Fraser said.

"In Shaun we've got a captain who wants to be out there, actively getting involved in the direction that the club is heading.

We haven't played as well as we would have liked, but with a modicum of luck we could have easily won two, possibly three championship matches

"I think Toby felt that sort of diminished his role as such, and I suppose myself coming in as managing director of cricket, there were some things that Toby was responsible for in 2008 that I'm now responsible for in 2009. I don't think he was enjoying the role that he had."

Middlesex have yet to win a match in Division Two of the County Championship and their defence of the Twenty20 Cup ended after seven straight defeats at the start of the group stage.

Fraser said: "We haven't played as well as we would have liked, but with a modicum of luck we could have easily won two, possibly three Championship matches.

"The weather has come at the wrong time for us in two games and we fell a couple of runs short of beating Surrey.

"We can rue our luck but the thing we have got to do is make sure that we play good, positive and aggressive cricket and believe that these things will change around, things will start going our way and suddenly we'll start shooting up the table."
