Tom Maynard made 71 on his Glamorgan debut in 2007

Glamorgan are confident of keeping Tom Maynard and Jim Allenby despite the recent unrest at the club.

Maynard signed a three-year contract before his father Matthew quit as director of cricket in November - one of four high profile resignations.

"Tom's emotions are rather raw at the moment as you would expect," said Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell.

"However, he has a three-year playing contract with us which we signed with him in August."

Despite being contracted to Glamorgan until 2013 Maynard has been linked with a move away from Wales with Surrey thought to be interested.

However, the 21-year-old is not allowed to enter discussions without Glamorgan's permission.

Maynard is trying to come terms with the departure of his father, who resigned along with former captain Jamie Dalrymple, president Peter Walker and vice-chairman and main club sponsor Nigel Roberts.

But Russell is adamant Tom Maynard is not going anywhere and will be led into the new season by new skipper and overseas player Alviro Petersen.

"Both Colin [Metson, managing director of cricket] and Alan [Hamer, chief executive] are working very hard with Tom to help him put these events behind himself and to achieve his full potential which we believe will take him all the way through to the England side."

Russell insists that just because of circumstances it does not mean a player can rip up a contract.

"As Edward Heath once said when it was suggested that they should renegotiate the terms of Britain's membership of the EEC. You just can't rip up an agreement just because the terms are no longer convenient to you," he said.

"When I was a young lad I used to work in the steel works during the summer holidays and in 1969 in August when I was working down there the steel works made my father redundant I didn't throw my tools down and walk out.

"This [Mathew Maynard's departure] could have happened any time over the next three years.

"We are very sympathetic to it and we are doing everything we can to accommodate those emotions and to help him [Tom Maynard] overcome them."

Russell is also confident of keeping Allenby, who was a Matthew Maynard recruit in 2009.

"Jim Allenby we are in contact with almost daily. I am having supper in Perth next week and Colin Metson is seeing him in Sydney on Saturday," revealed Russell.

"As far as we understand it is Jim's intention to return to Glamorgan next year. He has a house here. He is settled here. He likes the club. He likes the ground. So we have every expectation that he will return to us."

Russell said Glamorgan are hoping to have a first team coach appointed by January 2011, but he refused to confirm whether the club were interested in Matthew Elliott, the former Australia and Glamorgan opener.

The 35-year-old has been appointed to the reserve list of umpires, which is used to provide deputies for the county game when the regular officials are not available.

Wharf had a successful debut on the second XI circuit this year after being forced to hang up his boots through injury in 2009.

Bradford-born Wharf spent 10 summers with Glamorgan after spells with Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and played 13 one-day internationals for England while with the Welsh county.
