Matthew Elliott played for Glamorgan in 2000 and 2004 |
Former Australia batsman Matthew Elliott and New South Wales coach Matthew Mott have been interviewed to become Glamorgan's first team coach. BBC Sport Wales understands that Glamorgan representatives have met both men with a view to filling the gap left by Matthew Maynard's resignation. Elliott, who figured in 21 Tests, played for Glamorgan in 2000 and 2004. Mott is in the last year of his New South Wales deal, who he has coached for three seasons. During that period he was also the assistant coach at Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders under John Buchanan for two seasons, before a change of backroom staff following disappointing performances. Mott was interviewed for the New Zealand job last year but stayed in Sydney, while he was also linked with the head job at new IPL side Kochi. Left-handed opener Elliott helped Glamorgan to the one-day league title in 2004 during his time with the county. Whoever eventually replaces Maynard will come in to Glamorgan under Colin Metson, the new managing director of cricket. An appointment would restore some much-needed stability to a club which has been in turmoil in recent weeks following the resignation of three prominent officials. | 606: DEBATE |
Maynard (director of cricket), Jamie Dalrymple (captain) and Peter Walker (president) have all quit the Welsh club, while vice-chairman Nigel Roberts resigned briefly before rejoining Glamorgan after talks with Glamorgan officials. Roberts is the club's main sponsor through his business Paramount Interiors. The crisis at Glamorgan started in November when Dalrymple was replaced as captain by new overseas signing South African Alviro Petersen. Maynard wanted Dalyrmple to remain Glamorgan captain for the 2011 season - but a club statement said "there was no support for his recommendation". That was followed by Maynard's resignation, saying his "position was untenable" after former wicketkeeper and current committee member Metson was appointed above him in Glamorgan's coaching staff, taking the managing director of cricket role. Walker, a member of the county's cricket review group, followed and tendered his resignation from the county just 36 hours after being unanimously reappointed president as the turmoil hit new depths. Dalrymple also resigned as a player despite having one year remaining on his contract.
