Jim Allenby joined Glamorgan from Leicestershire last season |
Glamorgan director of cricket Matthew Maynard says England's selectors should take a look at all-rounder Jim Allenby. The uncapped Australian, 27, has been in fine form for Glamorgan grabbing his second successive FP t20 half-century as they won their opening two matches. Allenby qualifies to play for England under residency rules, having earlier spent four years at Leicestershire. "He's a quality cricketer not just in this form of the game but in all formats," Maynard told BBC Sport Wales. Maynard believes if the likes of Hampshire's Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb are pushing for England honours, then Allenby should also be in the frame. "To me, he's a far better player than those two," added Maynard. "I think the England selectors would be mad if they didn't look for as many people as they can." Allenby arrived at the Swalec Stadium midway through last season, initially on loan, after talks over a new contract at Grace Road broke down. | 606: DEBATE |
And Maynard believes he is now proving his worth in all competitions. On top of his t20 performances, Allenby has also hit 458 in the County Championship including 105 in last month's innnings win over Gloucestershire. He has also taken 24 wickets that has helped Glamorgan reach the top of Division Two. "He just wanted to talk to other counties while he was at Leicester," said Maynard. "I took him down the Bay, it was a beautiful day, spoke to him and his father and sold what we were trying to achieve here. He must have liked it. "Jim's in great form. He bats in the middle order in four-day cricket. "He's up there with our leading run scorers and you can see how devastating he is in the shortest form of the game as well."
