Glamorgan fear Australia call for bowler Shaun Tait

Shaun Tait celebrates a wicket at Melbourne
Aussie Shaun Tait celebrates taking a wicket against Pakistan recently

Matthew Maynard has revealed overseas star Shaun Tait could miss some of Glamorgan's Twenty 20 fixtures if he wins an Australia call-up.

The quick bowler recorded the fastest delivery on Aussie turf with a 99.86mph ball in their victory over Pakistan in front of a 60,054 crowd in Melbourne.

"I've spoken to Shaun since and he is looking forward to joining us for the Twenty 20," said boss Maynard.

"But there is a possibly that we may lose him for a couple of matches."

The 26-year-old, a star for champions Australia at the 2007 World Cup, was confirmed as Glamorgan's second overseas signing in December as Tait joined fellow Aussie Mark Cosgrove at the Swalec Stadium.

But Tait has impressed for the Australians in their recent Twenty20 campaign and consistently bowled over 90mph in their match against Pakistan at the at the MCG.

And the paceman hopes to surpass Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar's record delivery of 100.22mph at the 2003 World Cup.

Tait's stunning form for his country is a blow for Glamorgan as Australia may be tempted to name the South Australia star in their one-day international squad for their tour to England this summer.

Tait, who won the man-of-the-match award as he took three wickets for 13 runs as Australia defeated Pakistan by two runs earlier in the month, is set to join the Welsh county in June for their Twenty20 campaign.

But Australia's one-day squad are set for a three-week tour of England with five one-day internationals - starting on 22 June - and Tait could be involved with the Aussies.

"Unfortunately I can't do much about that until the tour parties are announced," said Glamorgan's director of cricket Maynard.

"But it will effect us if he gets picked for Australia but we can't do right for doing wrong.

"As if we pick someone who is having a poor overseas season, people think 'oh my god why have they signed him'.

"Or we sign someone who has hit the headlines with the fastest ball in Australia and now we're worried we may not get him because he will be kept by Australia."

Tait, though, will definitely be in action at the Swalec Stadium this summer as Australia's second one-day international with England is in Cardiff on 24 June.

While Glamorgan, who reached Twenty20 finals day at Edgbaston in 2004, hope Tait will be available for some of their 16 Twenty20 pool matches - before a potential quarter-final on 26 or 27 July.

Tait only returned to action last year after taking a break suffering from mental and physical exhaustion in 2008.
