Glamorgan's Wood opts to retire

Matthew Wood

Glamorgan batsman Matthew Wood has decided to retire from first-class cricket citing personal reasons.

Wood signed for the Welsh county in October 2007 after being released by Yorkshire, but will not now take up the second year of his contract in Cardiff.

The 31-year-old averaged 38.60 in the Friends Provident Trophy last season, but that dipped to below 20 in his 10 County Championship innings.

"Matthew was a great asset," said director of cricket Matthew Maynard.

"He will be sorely missed both out on the pitch and in the dressing room."
