The ground has gone under a 9.5m redevelopment |
Glamorgan's Sophia Gardens ground is to be renamed the Swalec Stadium after the county agreed a 1.5m sponsorship deal. The 10-year deal will also see 300,000 being poured into community initiatives. "This is of enormous importance to Glamorgan Cricket Club," said chairman Paul Russell. "It is now an iconic stadium and everything we've planned has turned out. It is on time, on budget and looks stunning." The 9.5m redevelopment of the stadium has seen the capacity increased from 5,500 to 15,643. The Cardiff venue will host an Ashes Test between England and Australia in 2009. It gained the Ashes honour ahead of the established Old Trafford and Durham's Riverside stadium.
