Croft rejects rebel competition

Glamorgan spinner Robert Croft says he has rejected early overtures for him to join the rebel Indian Cricket League.

Croft says he understands why players might join the ICL, but fears it could damage the game in Britain.

"It is very tempting, because for most cricketers you're not paid like Premiership footballers," Croft said.

"But from what I've heard over the past couple of days, I've come to the decision that it's something that there's no way I'd do."

The launches this season of the ICL and its rival officially-backed Indian Premier League have seen the landscape of world cricket shift dramatically.

As well as the huge sums of money washing around the two competitions, the animosity shown towards the rebel ICL by official governing bodies has split opinion in the game.

There is also the fear that the England and Wales Cricket Board could see its best players tempted away from the county cricket season to compete in India.

Additionally there is the possibility that Test tours could be affected, meaning the ECB's revenue falls and it has less to plough back into the grass roots of the game.

The ECB is expected to bring its stance into line with other national bodies by banning any players involved in the rebel tournament from its domestic leagues.

"When you take into account what could happen to the game, which I've been led to believe from people I've spoken to, with a financial hit to British cricket... it wouldn't have sat comfortably with me," Croft added.

"I've been really proud to represent Glamorgan as long as I have done and I want to for as long as I possibly can.

"The day eventually when I walk out the door I want to be able to walk back in without any animosity.

"Taking all those factors into account, it's something that doesn't suit me at the moment.

"But I stress that I do respect everybody's individual rights to choose to go if they want to."

Glamorgan are currently waiting to see if overseas recruit Jason Gillespie is prevented from playing for them after the Australia paceman opted to join the ICL.
