Glamorgan insist they will not sign Brian Lara |
Glamorgan insist they will not be signing batting legend Brian Lara. The West Indian great has been linked with a move to the Welsh county but team manager Matthew Maynard says there is "no truth" in the rumour. But Maynard did reveal Glamorgan have failed in a bid to sign Australian batting star Adam Gilchrist for their Twenty20 Cup campaign. "There is no truth in the suggestion that we are trying to sign Brian Lara," said Maynard. "None whatsoever." | 606: DEBATE |
Former Sophia Gardens skipper Maynard, appointed Glamorgan's cricket manager in September, is desperately trying to rebuild the Welsh county following a season to forget. Glamorgan suffered their worst ever campaign in 2007, winning just twice in all competitions as they finished bottom of both the County Championship and NatWest Pro40 league. But Maynard's revolution has already begun as Glamorgan signed retired Australian strike bowler Jason Gillespie as their overseas player for the 2008 season. Maynard would like a big-name, aggressive batsman to lead Glamorgan's Twenty20 charge in June. But the former England assistant coach insists it will not be former Warwickshire favourite Lara. The 38-year-old left-hander quit international cricket after last year's World Cup but Lara still holds the Test record of 11,953 runs. "We have not spoken or plan to speak to Brian Lara or his representatives," said Maynard, who, as a player, guided Glamorgan to the Twenty20 finals day in 2004. | We want to sign the right kind of individual Glamorgan cricket manager Matthew Maynard |
"We tried to sign Adam Gilchrist but he was unavailable this season. "Adam would have been ideal as we would like a player of international calibre to make an impact for us in Twenty20." Aggressive Aussie batsman Gilchrist boasts one of the highest strike-rates in the history of both Test and one-day cricket but last week bowed out of international cricket. Maynard, though, vowed Glamorgan will continue their search for a Twenty20 specialist. "We want the right kind of individual," he said. "We are not going to sign someone for the sake of it."
