John Derrick's replacement as Glamorgan coach by Adrian Shaw came as no great surprise.
 | I feel a lot of sympathy for John Derrick |
The county have done poorly and John had such a close relationship with former skipper Robert Croft that it seemed likely he would go after Robert lost the captaincy.
You could say that John was very successful in his role - he took Glamorgan to one-day titles in 2002 and 2004, a lot of coaches would die for that.
But a lot of senior players have gone. That's difficult to cope with, and a lack of overseas players has not helped.
I feel a lot of sympathy for John. His first spell as senior coach came when I was captain.
I wasn't sure then that he was the right man, and I don't think that John was either - he felt better suited to working with the second team and younger players.
But the club didn't have much money, and John was very good about taking on a role that he didn't feel suited for.
 | There's not a great deal of pressure on Adrian Shaw and new captain David Hemp for next season |
I thought that now he would be dropped back to the second team, but he seems to have been demoted even further.
I hope that there is some job for him with the Cricket Board of Wales.
There's not a great deal of pressure on Adrian Shaw and new captain David Hemp for next season.
There are no overseas players coming in, and if anything people expect the county to be worse than this year.
Glamorgan are not in a good state, although it pains me to say it. I gave a lot to them in my 20 years, and they mean a lot to me.
But Adrian's a very positive chap. I like him, he has good values and a fine work ethic.
He'll take on the massive challenge and can hopefully bring a few youngsters through and surprise a few people.
