Powell hit the second highest score in Glamorgan history |
England batting coach Matthew Maynard says Mike Powell's hot form could win him international recognition. The Glamorgan batsman, 29, hit 299 in the win over Gloucestershire, adding to a 202 against Essex, as he passed 1,000 runs for the season.
But Maynard said the Abergavenny man must keep patient and suggested his first chance could come in one-dayers.
"I've been delighted for Mike, if the England guys weren't doing so well he'd be in for the next Test," said Maynard.
"There's a real hunger in the Test players to retain their places and succeed, and other guys like Owais Shah have had to wait despite long runs of consistent run gathering.
 | The one-dayers will force some tough decisions on the selectors |
"Mike just has to keep churning out the runs and keep the belief that he is going to play for England.
"I know that [England coach] Duncan Fletcher fears burn-out, and it will be tough for the entire first team to play the Pakistan series, the ICC, the Ashes and the World Cup.
"The one-dayers will force some tough decisions on the selectors, so Mike has to keep banging on the door."
Powell's 299 was the second highest score in Glamorgan history, including two sixes and 38 fours from a 479-ball, 11-hour marathon.
 | The selectors will be taking note, but Mike's certainly far off the Test team |
Only ex-England opener Steve James has beaten that mark for the Welsh county, scoring an undefeated 309 against Sussex at Colwyn Bay in 2000.
"I was convinced that he was going to break my record and I have to admit to mixed feelings," James told BBC Sport Wales.
"Mike's a good mate of mine and if anyone was going to take the record I hoped it would be him. I certainly wish he'd made it to 300.
"He got a good ball on 299, and you're so nervous at that stage. I remember getting the wobbles on 296 at Colwyn Bay when I saw a guy climbing the scoreboard with a three in his hand!"
Despite his praise of Powell, James believes that his friend remains a long way from England's plans.
"The selectors will be taking note, but he's certainly far off the Test team," said James.
"Shah, Ed Joyce and Rob Key are all probably ahead of him in waiting for a chance.
 | Everything just seems to have come together this year |
"Mike got obsessed with the England idea a few years ago and it affected his play, he should just concentrate on churning out the runs.
"There's been a lot more pressure on him at Glamorgan since the likes of Matthew Maynard, myself and other senior players retired, but it's good to see him really taking the responsibility on board."
Powell seems to be heeding the advice and feeling at ease with his role.
"Everything just seems to have come together this year - my training, technique and life outside cricket," Powell told BBC Sport Wales.
"The 299 was fantastic, although there was some disappointment that I didn't manage to take Steve James' record.
"I'll just keep getting the runs and hopefully England will be looking at me, but I can only concentrate on my own game."
