Derrick 'under enormous pressure'
Glamorgan coach John Derrick
Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell admits coach John Derrick is feeling the strain at Sophia Gardens after a disastrous start to the season.

A six-wicket defeat to Hampshire in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy left them with just two wins all year.

"John's under enormous pressure as coach of what is effectively a national side," Russell told BBC Sport Wales.

"But I hope that the board here are not unforgiving and we will do all that we can to help him out."

The Glamorgan committee meet on Wednesday, and amongst the items on the agenda are likely to be the recruitment of a second overseas player to join Matthew Elliott.

It seems like our poor form from the four-day game is seeping into our one-day play

"We may discuss that, but it has all been media speculation," said Russell, amidst a clamour in Wales for a recruit to bolster the county's thin batting line-up.

"We've had an enormous challenge coming to terms with the way first-division cricket is played in the four-day game," added Russell.

"There's a different emphasis. We've analysed it and can see that we won more games to gain promotion last year than Warwickshire won in claiming the first-division title."

Derrick himself admitted to feeling the pressure but vowed to battle on.

"It's difficult, but you just have to keep going," he told BBC Sport Wales.

"Hampshire played well, but we were 30 runs short of our target and that cost us the match.

"It seems like our poor form from the four-day game is seeping into our one-day play.

I am happy to be back bowling and I am very hopeful I will be fit for Bangladesh
Glamorgan and England bowler Simon Jones
"We had a good, constructive chat after the game about how we want to move forward."

One piece of good news for Glamorgan was the fact that England pace bowler Simon Jones' back injury stood up to the demands of the Hampshire tie.

"I am glad I got through it, I felt fine," said the 26-year-old.

"I am happy to be back bowling and I am very hopeful I will be fit for Bangladesh.

"I just need to play in a couple of games. We have two matches against Bangladesh to get ourselves in form and then we have to try to bowl the Aussies out.

"I think we will do well against Australia. We have played well over the last couple of years.

"The bowlers are in good shape. I didn't get my proper chance against them last time."
