Kaneria will miss rest of season

Danish Kaneria
Kaneria has been in excellent form for Essex recently

Essex leg-spinner Danish Kaneria is set to miss the rest of the season after it was confirmed he will need an operation on a finger.

The 28-year-old was injured in day two of the LV County Championship match against Worcestershire at Castle Park.

"Danish suffered a small fracture on the end of a finger," Essex physio Peter Gettings said.

"It's a big blow to us because he's a world-class performer and has been a massive part of our success."

Kaneria attempted to take a return catch when he suffered the injury and a hand specialist confirmed he would need the operation.

Gettings also confirmed that fast bowler Maurice Chambers will have surgery on his left ankle on 1 September.

But Chambers will be allowed to continue playing on a game-by-game basis until the operation.
