Rogers joins fellow Aussie Jonathon Moss at the County Ground |
Derbyshire have signed Western Australia batsman Chris Rogers to replace injured Michael di Venuto. The 26-year-old was suggested to coach David Houghton by di Venuto after a back injury put paid to his chances of leading the team this summer.
"We had a choice of two. We spoke to Marcus North, but he'd already been approached by Durham.
"Chris has played for Australia A, he bats in the top three and we're really pleased," Houghton told BBC Sport.
The club also consulted Worcestershire's Director of Cricket Tom Moody, who formerly coached Rogers in Perth, before making the approach.
Rogers scored 910 runs at an average of 53 during the Australain domestic season which ended last week.
He joins compatriot Jonathon Moss at the County Ground, with Derbyshire pinning their hopes on two little-known overseas signings to spearhead their attempt to win promotion from Championship Division Two.
Luke Sutton will captain Derbyshire in the absence of di Venuto, who hopes to return to the club in 2005.
He underwent surgery earlier this week and has been told to rest for five months.
