Northants pair Andrew Hall and James Middlebrook held up Surrey with an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 120 on day two at The Oval.

Despite 78 from Rob White, Northants, who had resumed on 12-0 in reply to Surrey's 322, looked in trouble at 163-7 as Tim Linley picked up 4-38.

But captain Hall (55no) and Middlebrook (49no) dug in to survive the final 40 overs of the day.

They had taken Northants to 283-7 by the close, a deficit of 39.

Two of Linley's scalps came in a spell when Surrey took four wickets for 24 runs inside nine overs during the afternoon session to seize control, only for Hall, who brought up his 50 from 145 balls, with seven boundaries, and Middlebrook to frustrate them by batting out the final session.
