Rory Hamilton-Brown and Gareth Batty both hit fifties as Surrey were bowled out for 322 by Northants on day one of their Division Two game at The Oval.

On a day when Surrey strugled to put together sizeable partnerships, captain Hamilton-Brown provided the backbone to the innings with 74.

Batty helped them past 300 with a valuable 64 as Lee Daggett and James Middlebrook both took three wickets.

Northants safely negotiated four overs before stumps to close on 12-0.
