Chris Woakes completed a haul of 50 Championship wickets for the first time |
Chris Woakes led the way with a five-wicket haul as Warwickshire sealed County Championship Division One safety with victory over Hampshire. Woakes took 5-34 as the Bears completed a 10-wicket win at The Rose Bowl. Hampshire, resuming at the start of their second innings 85 runs behind, were bowled out for just 132, of which Sean Ervine made 62. And Bears openers Ian Westwood and Varun Chopra saw their side to a third straight Championship win on 51-0. It was the suddenly in-form Bears' sixth successive victory in all competitions, to leave them in good heart for Saturday's CB 40 final with Somerset at Lord's. Jimmy Adams was the first to depart for the hosts, caught behind to give Woakes his first victim of the day. Fellow opener Michael Carberry then lasted just a few more deliveries and Phil Hughes managed a solitary boundary before being trapped leg before. | 606: DEBATE |
Woakes then claimed his third wicket of the day, Hampshire's first-innings saviour Liam Dawson, before bagging wicketkeeper Michael Bates too. Youngster James Vince was was trapped lbw by Darren Maddy to leave Hampshire reeling at 44-6, still 41 runs short of making Warwickshire bat again. The wicket brought Ervine to the crease and he began to play with freedom, cutting and driving powerfully. But he found support only from Danny Briggs, the only other Hampshire man to make double figures, in a stand of 56 for the ninth wicket. Westwood (27no) and Chopra (18no) then knocked the runs off without alarm as Ashley Giles' men maintained their fine end to a disappointing season.
