Warwickshire moved a step closer to Division One safety with two bonus points on the opening day of their Championship match with Hampshire.

The visitors reduced Hampshire to 147-6 at stumps following a rain-affected opening day at The Rose Bowl.

Darren Maddy took three wickets as he home side initially slumped to 85-6.

But Liam Dawson (40 not out) and Dominic Cork (41 not out) led the fightback, with the pair sharing an unbroken partnership of 62.

Cork blasted 41 off 38 balls which included seven fours, while Dawson's knock was more sedate, just five fours in his two-and-a-half stay at the crease.

Hampshire, who are safe from relegation, gave a debut to former England fast bowler Simon Jones, who is playing his first first-class game since August 2008.
