COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Canterbury: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Hampshire 204 & 272-6, Kent 182 Hampshire 4pts, Kent 3pts Match scorecard
Hampshire opener Jimmy Adams has now hit 1,330 first-class runs this summer |
Michael Carberry, Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson all hit half-centuries as Hampshire built up a lead of 294 on day three against Kent at Canterbury. With both sides fighting relegation, Hampshire, 16-0 overnight, began steadily, Carberry (56) and Adams (52) taking their lead past 100. Dawson (50) continued the accumulation before becoming one of two wickets in as many balls for Darren Stevens. Stevens (3-37) struck again late on as rain saw Hampshire close on 272-6. This gritty display certainly improved the visitors' survival chances compared to Kent, who, barring a miraculous run chase on the final day, now look like they will have to win their final game against title-chasing Yorkshire at Headingley next week to stay up. Carberry and Adams took 47 overs to put on 92 for the first wicket, making for dour watching for the St Lawrence Ground crowd. | 606: DEBATE |
Adams briefly lit up proceedings by clubbing a James Tredwell for two sixes, but he fell leg before to Malinga Bandara just before lunch after missing with an attempted slog sweep. Carberry followed after the interval, also pinned lbw by Bandara, while Australian Phillip Hughes lifted the run rate with a cameo 38 before becoming the third lbw victim of the innings, this time to Tredwell's arm ball. Dawson caught the eye as Kent's weakened attack toiled, before Stevens provided the inspiration with the second new ball. He enticed Dawson to edge to first slip before Sean Ervine was held by a juggling Tredwell off the next delivery. He also picked up Michael Bates in what turned out to be the last over of the day before a storm forced a premature close.
