Bandara achieved his best figures of the Championship season

Malinga Bandara took his best figures of the season as Kent controlled day one of their relegation battle with Hampshire at Canterbury.

Bandara took 4-42, while there were two wickets each for Simon Cook and James Tredwell, as the visitors slipped from 116-3 to 204 all out.

Opener Jimmy Adams top-scored with 84 and James Vince made 36.

Kent closed 189 runs behind on 15-1, Dominic Cork picking up the wicket of Sam Northeast.

Earlier, Bandara, who before today had taken only 10 Championship wickets at the cost of 604 runs, helped run through the Hampshire tail and dismiss the visitors inside 82 overs.

Bandara picked up the wickets of Cork, Chris Wood and Danny Briggs, after the earlier dismissal of Liam Dawson, as the visitors collected just a single batting point.

Hampshire initially struggled in the first session and limped to 68-3 at lunch, at a scoring rate of barely two an over.

Adams' patient 222-ball innings contained 12 fours, but once he fell to Tredwell (2-49), the writing was on the wall.

Kent made a miserable start to their reply, losing Sam Northeast for a third-ball duck.

Northeast, having endured luckless spells at number five and at three in the Kent batting order, opened the innings at his own behest, but went with only a run on the board after dragging a Cork off-cutter onto his own stumps.
