COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Edgbaston: Warwickshire 294 & 140 beat Kent 111 & 228 by 95 runs Warwicks 21pts, Kent 3pts Match scorecard
Woakes (l) and Carter took 19 of the 20 Kent wickets between them |
Chris Woakes and Neil Carter shared the final five wickets as Warwickshire wrapped up victory over Kent by 95 runs on the third morning at Edgbaston. Kent who resumed on 131-5, needing 193 more to win, soon slumped to 161-9 before Martin van Jaarsveld helped them to 228 with an unbeaten 110. Woakes (5-45) finished with career-best match figures of 11-97, while Carter claimed a season's best 5-60. Victory eased the Bears' relegation worries while leaving Kent in the mire. Warwickshire climb to fifth in Division One, pending the result of Durham's clash with County Championship leaders Nottinghamshire. But they are now 18 points ahead of second-bottom Kent, who face a crunch clash with seventh-placed Hampshire at Canterbury next week, and cannot be caught by bottom-of-the-table Essex. | 606: DEBATE |
Kent then finish the season at Headingley, against Yorkshire, while Warwickshire travel to The Rose Bowl to face Hampshire in their final game. It was Carter who made the initial breakthrough when Darren Stevens, who had taken three boundaries off Woakes, clipped a catch to mid-wicket. His replacement Alex Blake never looked like hanging around long, surviving an lbw shout first ball and edging his second short of the slips before being caught behind off the third for a duck to give Carter 50 Championship wickets for the first time. Woakes then removed both Azhar Mahmood and Simon Cook both for ducks before the Bears were held up by Van Jaarsveld and last man Matt Coles. The pair put on 67, with Van Jaarsveld completing the 26th first-class century of his career before Carter came back into the attack to have Coles caught at cover to complete victory.
