Warwickshire celebrate
Woakes celebrates dismissing Martin van Jaarsveld in the Kent first innings

Chris Woakes put Warwickshire on the brink of victory over fellow Division One strugglers Kent at Edgbaston.

Woakes completed a haul of 6-52 as Kent were bowled out for 111 in their first innings, a deficit of 183.

The Bears slipped to 54-8 in their second innings but Woakes (54) and Neil Carter (26) added 72 for the ninth wicket to take them to 140 all out.

The same pair then reduced Kent to 131-5 at the close, 193 runs short of an unlikely win.

It could have been much worse for Kent, who fell to 36-4 before a stand of 96 between Martin van Jaarsveld (44 not out) and Geraint Jones (41), only for Jones to be trapped lbw by Woakes in the final over of the day.

The visitors has earlier resumed on 37-3 in their first innings but were shot out as Woakes, who who received good support from Carter (3-46), completed his best haul in the County Championship.

Warwickshire chose not to enforce the follow-on but Woakes and Carter were soon back in the action as only one of the Bears' top eight managed to reach double figures.

Woakes was the last man to fall, bowled by Simon Cook, but he and Carter again combined to move Warwickshire close to a win that would all but preserve their Division One status and leave Kent firmly in the mire.
