Match scorecard

Sussex captain Mike Yardy
Yardy faced 157 balls for his unbeaten 100, hitting 13 fours and two sixes

An unbeaten century from captain Mike Yardy carried Sussex to a draw with Surrey at Guildford.

Resuming the day on 39-2, 36 behind, Sussex found themselves staring at defeat when they slipped to 94-5.

But Yardy (100 not out) shared 108 with Ben Brown (52) and 73 with Yasir Arafat (23 not out) to take the visitors to 275-6 when a draw was agreed.

Sussex take seven points but are replaced at the top of Division Two by Glamorgan, while Surrey move seventh.

Sussex's day got off to the worst possible start when Michael Thornely was caught at gully of Chris Tremlett off the first ball of the day.

Ed Joyce and Murray Goodwin combined to take the visitors into the lead, but when they fell in quick succession - to Gareth Batty and Stuart Meaker respectively - Sussex were in the mire.

But that was Surrey's last success for 32 overs as Yardy and Brown turned things around.

Meaker had Brown caught behind with the second new ball but Arafat arrived to see Yardy to three figures and Sussex to the draw.

Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams told BBC Surrey:
"We were playing against a good team who were top of the league.

"I think they showed today why they are where they are; they dug in and were resilient and (Michael) Yardy's innings was exceptional.

"But over the three days we managed to play we dominated a good team and that's with seven players under the age of 24."
