Hughes hit 27 boundaries and one six in his career best 156 |
Chesney Hughes hit a career best 156 for Derbyshire before Northants hit back on day two at Chesterfield. Resuming on 124-5, Derbyshire were bowled out for 319 to lead by 118 runs before Ben Howgego and David Sales helped the visitors close on 181-2. Howgego (74) and Sales (84) led Northants' second innings fight-back as the pair claimed unbeaten 50s. Hughes' second century for the hosts came in just his eighth first-class appearance and included 27 boundaries. With the game finely poised on the second morning, Northants bowled poorly, with Hughes and Robin Peterson adding 51 to their side's total within the first 30 minutes. Peterson hit 58 off 48 balls before edging Lee Dagget's delivery to second slip to end a sixth-wicket stand with 19-year-old Hughes, who was dropped in the previous over, of 98. Elton Chigumbura was the pick of the visitors' attack taking 5-92, his best figures since joining Northants. The visitors looked to be struggling in their second innings at 25-2 before Sales and Howgego mounted an impressive spell at the crease to frustrate Derbyshire.
