Northants fought back against Derbyshire as 15 wickets fell on day one at Chesterfield. After being asked to bat, Northants were shot out for 201, losing three wickets for no runs on two occasions. All-rounder Greg Smith took career-best figures of 5-45, with Jonathan Clare claiming 4-42. But Derbyshire struggled in reply, as Elton Chigumbura took 4-48 to reduce them to 124-5 at the close, 77 behind, with Chesney Hughes 61 not out. Chigumbura had a hand in all five wickets to fall, as he deflected a drive from Wayne Madsen onto the stumps to run out Chris Rogers and to make matters worse, Madsen fell leg before to Chigumbura from the very next ball. | 606: DEBATE |
Wes Durston edged low to first slip before Smith played back to a good length ball and was bowled for four. Hughes responded to the crisis with some punishing drives and reached his 50 by driving Middlebrook out of the ground. But Chigumbura returned to have Dan Redfern caught behind for 21, before Hughes and Robin Peterson (18 not out) stood firm in fading light. Earlier, the home side lost fast bowler Mark Footitt with an ankle injury in the pre-match warm-up but Rogers elected to put Northants in on a well-grassed pitch which proved a shrewd decision. Smith and Clare tore through the Northants' top order to have them 59-4 and 127-7, before the tail wagged to earn the promotion-hopefuls a batting point.
