COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Grace Road: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Derbyshire 182, Leicestershire 260-6 Leics 5pts, Derbys 2pts Match scorecard
Tom New shared an unbroken stand of 64 with Claude Henderson |
Leicestershire recovered from a middle-order slump to take the upper hand over Derbyshire on day two at Grace Road. With the hosts resuming on 117-1, Matt Boyce (60) and Jacques du Toit (44) took their second-wicket stand to 85 before both fell in quick succession. Mark Footitt (2-56) then struck twice as Leicestershire lost five wickets for 57 runs to slip to 196-6. But Tom New (45 not out) and Claude Henderson (24 not out) combined to take the hosts to 260-6, a lead of 78 runs. Heavy rain delayed play until 1400 BST but Derbyshire made early use of the helpful bowling conditions, when Du Toit hooked Steffan Jones to Robin Peterson and, in the next over, Boyce gloved Tim Groenewald to Chris Rogers at slip. | 606: DEBATE |
The Derbyshire seamers continued their good progress as James Taylor top-edged Footitt to wicketkeeper James Pipe and Paul Nixon and Wayne White both fell cheaply. But, after more rain, New and Henderson took the attack to the visitors to ensure that Leicestershire did not surrender the initiative. Riding their luck, the seventh-wicket pair added 39 runs in the last seven overs to take their unbroken stand to 64 at the close.
