Matthew Hoggard and Nadeem Malik took four wickets each as Leicestershire dominated day one of their clash with Derbyshire at Grace Road.

Hoggard (4-77) and Malik (4-32) reduced Derbyshire to 67-8 in the morning session, including a spell of 5-14.

And it needed a first half-century of the summer from Dan Redfern (85) to rescue the visitors as they were all out for 182.

In reply, Matthew Boyce posted a half-century as the Foxes closed on 117-1.

Derbyshire's decision to bat proved unwise as the conditions proved perfect for Leicestershire's swing attack.

Hoggard bowled 15 overs unchanged and Malik was in his element during a shocking morning session for the visitors.

Half of the Derbyshire order were out inside 17 overs and with 37 runs on the scoreboard.

Foxes skipper Hoggard claimed the first three wickets in seven overs as Chris Rogers was lbw, Wayne Madsen (14), who was the only batsman to make double figures before lunch, was caught behind and Garry Park edged to the slips.

Nathan Buck - who had seen Madsen dropped on four - was replaced by Malik and he immediately had Greg Smith lbw.

Hoggard had Chesney Hughes lbw for a duck after offering no shot before Malik struck a rich vein of form that saw him take 4-7 off seven overs.

Robin Peterson, Lee Godard and Steffan Jones all got edges driving and at lunch things looked ominous for Derbyshire.

But Redfern led the fight back as 115 runs were posted in 29 overs and, along with Tim Groenewald, he shared a ninth-wicket stand of 89.

Groenewald was bowled by Buck and Redfern, who made his 85 off 121 balls, was caught at mid-wicket off Claude Henderson to bring the innings to a close.

In reply, Leicestershire's Greg Smith and Boyce put on 54 together before Greg Smith of Derbyshire claimed his namesake's wicket.

Boyce hit nine boundaries for his 50 as he and Jacques du Toit cmopiled an unbeaten 63-run second-wicket stand before stumps.
