COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Lord's: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Surrey 167 & 110-7, Middlesex 423 Middlesex 3pts Match scorecard
Malan faced 177 balls for his 107, hitting 15 fours and a six |
Dawid Malan hit a century and Toby Roland-Jones took five wickets as Middlesex closed in on an innings victory over Surrey at Lord's. After the hosts resumed on 179-2, Malan (107) and Owais Shah (63) extended their second-wicket partnership to 100. Gareth Berg (45) also contributed as Middlesex were eventually bowled out for 423, a lead of 256. Seamer Roland-Jones then took his maiden first-class five-wicket haul to reduce Surrey to 110-6 at the close. Middlesex managed to add 115 runs in the morning session for the loss of Shah, who was caught behind off Jade Dernbach, and Neil Dexter (24), who fell to the off-spin of Matt Spriegel. | 606: DEBATE |
Malan and Berg then added a rapid 72 for the fifth wicket, but both succumbed to Chris Tremlett, whose spell with the second new ball yielded three wickets in five deliveries. Roland-Jones survived being dropped twice to take Middlesex to full batting points for the first time this summer, and what looks likely to be a total that will ensure that do not have to bat again. Surrey were given some hope by an opening stand of 75 between Steve Davies (43) and Tom Lancefield (24). But when Roland-Jones had Davies caught behind, it began a collapse that saw Surrey lose six wickets for 16 runs to slide into a virtually hopeless position.
