Tim Murtagh took five wickets as Division Two bottom side Middlesex dominated Surrey on day one at Lord's.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat, the visitors were shot out for just 167, with only Mark Ramprakash (44) providing any real resistance.

Murtagh (5-52) was well supported by new-ball partner Pedro Collins (4-68).

Openers Scott Newman (54) and John Simpson (36) added 82, before Owais Shah (44 no) and Dawid Malan (35 no) took Middlesex to 179-2 at the close.

In bowler-friendly conditions, Surrey openers Tom Lancefield and Steven Davies managed to take the score to 39 before Davies was bowled by former Surrey man Murtagh.

Collins then trapped Lancefield and Rory Hamilton-Brown lbw in successive deliveries as the Surrey rot firmly began.

All of the top six were dismissed either bowled or lbw as Middlesex bowled intelligently to exploit the swing available.

Matt Spriegel (25) and Gareth Batty (15) put up some resistance with a seventh-wicket partnership of 26, but when Batty fell to Murtagh, Surrey lost their last four wickets for 15 runs.

Surrey's attack was unable to match the intelligence of their London neighbours, with Newman and Simpson adding almost half of their opponents' total before Simpson played on off Jade Dernbach.

Gareth Batty trapped Newman lbw, but Shah and Malan ensured the day belonged to Middlesex.
