COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Derby: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Worcestershire 279, Derbyshire 183-4 Derbys 3pts, Worcs 3pts Match scorecard
Wayne Madsen is a former South Africa hockey international |
A century stand between Wayne Madsen and Chesney Hughes helped Derbyshire close in on Worcestershire on a rain-affected second day at Derby. Resuming on 43-0 in reply to the visitors' 279, Derbyshire quickly lost Chris Rogers and Garry Park. Madsen (75) and Hughes (44) then combined for a stand of 113. But both men fell to Richard Jones (2-60), leaving Greg Smith and Dan Redfern to take Derbyshire to the close on 183-4, 96 behind. Rogers was caught behind down the leg-side off the bowling of Alan Richardson from the second ball of the day, while Park was trapped lbw by Matt Mason in the next over. But Madsen and Hughes combined to take the hosts to lunch, even though Madsen was put down by wicketkeeper Cox in the final over before the break. A thunderstorm during the interval followed by steady rain prevented the players from returning to the field until 1620 BST and wiped 37 from the day's play. On the resumption, Madsen was again put down, this time by Moeen Ali at gully but was denied his third successive Championship hundred when he forced Jones to Dave Wheeldon. Hughes edged Jones to Cox soon after, but Smith and Redfern combined to prevent any further setbacks.
