COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Chesterfield: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Surrey 391 & 50-1, Derbyshire 237 Derbyshire 4pts, Surrey 7pts Match scorecard
Madsen's 109 was his third first-class century of the summer |
Wayne Madsen hit a century but could not prevent Surrey ending day two at Chesterfield with a sizeable lead. After Surrey were eventually all out for 391, Derbyshire were in trouble at 81-6 as Tim Linley (4-13) made inroads before being forced off injured. But Madsen and Lee Goddard (67) rescued the hosts with a seventh-wicket stand of 137 as they were bowled out for 237. Surrey opted not to enforce the follow-on and closed on 50-1 in their second innings, a lead of 204. They will now look to bat Derbyshire out of the game before relying on an under-strength attack to try and bowl the hosts out for a second time after being told that Linley has a suspected torn ligament in his foot which will prevent him from bowling again in the match. He certainly made an impact, not only by helping Chris Tremlett add 27 to his side's overnight score at the start of the day but also with a devastating spell of swing bowling. After Andre Nel had Chris Rogers caught at point, Linley ripped through the rest of the Derbyshire top order, having Garry Park and Chesney Hughes both caught behind before bowling Greg Smith and Wes Durston. Madsen, who had made just 77 in seven previous Championship innings before this effort of 109 off 193 balls, and Goddard regrouped, but their partnership was a rare highlight as Surrey ended the day well on top.
