COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Chesterfield: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Surrey 364-9 v Derbyshire Derbyshire 3pts, Surrey 4pts Match scorecard
Ramprakash fell one short of his 112th first-class century |
Mark Ramprakash was out one short of a century as Surrey edged the opening day of their County Championship clash with Derbyshire at Chesterfield. Ramprakash shared 141 for the fourth wicket with Usman Afzaal (73) as Surrey looked set to post a formidable total after reaching 276-3. But despite Stewart Walters also making a half-century, they were pegged back by a Tim Groenewald-inspired fightback. The seamer finished with a season's best 5-75 as Surrey closed on 364-9. It was the first time a Derbyshire bowler had taken five wickets in an innings this season, while Steffan Jones chipped in with 3-60 as the home side battled back after tea. Before that the day belonged to Ramprakash, who thought he had reached the 112th first-class century of his 23-year career when he stroked Groenewald for his ninth four. But the scoreboard had made an error and he was only on 95. It proved costly as he edged Groenewald into his stumps in the bowler's following over to depart 41 runs short of 1,000 for the season. Groenewald had already removed Afzaal, caught at second slip, at that stage to start of slide of 5-65 in 18 overs, which ended with Walters also being caught at second slip in the penultimate over of the day to complete his five-wicket haul.
