FRIENDS PROVIDENT t20, Beckenham: Surrey 201-4 beat Kent 163-8 by 38 runs Match scorecard
Surrey teenager Jason Roy hit an unbeaten century on only his third Twenty20 appearance to earn his team a 38-run win over Kent at Beckenham.
Roy smashed five sixes and 11 fours in his county record 101 off 57 balls, backed by Steven Davies (42) and Andrew Symonds (31) as Surrey piled up 201-4.
Symonds then took 5-18 with his offspin as Kent were limited to 163-8 in reply.
Surrey remain in second place in South Group, leaving Kent next-to-bottom with just two wins in eight matches.
Former Whitgift School prodigy Roy's hundred was the first Twenty20 ton by a Surrey batsman since the short-form format started eight seasons ago to ease his side
Largely courtesy of the efforts of 19-year-old Roy, particularly in a stand of 63 in five overs with Symonds, Surrey totalled 200 for the second time in 24 hours, one more than they had posted at The Oval against Hampshire the previous evening.
A tight bowling display coupled with athletic fielding then inflicting a sixth defeat in eight outings for the subdued Spitfires, despite Martin van Jaarsveld's 82 from 49 balls.
Kent skipper Rob Key told BBC Radio Kent:
"It was always going to be a tough ask - 200 on the Beckenham wicket is a very good score. Generally when we've won games here in the past we've looked to bat first and score around 160.
"We're missing the injured Joe Denly and Amjad Khan a fair bit and that could be the difference this year.
"Other teams have really moved forward and spent cash on overseas signings, whereas we've lost a few players.
"Ryan McLaren's a big loss with everything he gives you. We've had Yasir Arafat in the past, and Wayne Parnell last season. We're really missing a seamer with Amjad out."
