Rain ruins most of day at Cardiff

LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Cardiff:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Glamorgan 19-0 v Surrey
Match scorecard

LV County Championship

Just eight overs' play was possible in the day at Cardiff as rain ruined the opening day of Glamorgan's County Championship match against Surrey.

No play was possible before tea but, after a delayed start (1615 BST), the Division Two leaders reached 19-0.

But then rain arrived again, forcing umpires Michael Gough and David Millns to take the players from the field.

It was promotion-chasing Glamorgan's first significant loss of play to the weather this season.

Before Saturday's first day, they had lost only 90 minutes' play in their opening seven matches.

Glamorgan, chasing a record fifth successive Championship win at Sophia Gardens, opted to bring in Huw Waters.

He was the only change to the side that beat Leicestershire last week, veteran spinner Robert Croft being overlooked.

Surrey are bottom, but had their first win in midweek against Northants.

The visitors are without South African paceman Andre Nel, who starts a two-game disciplinary ban.
