South African duo Andre Nel and Jake Dernbach both hit their highest first-class score as Surrey rallied to within 14 runs of maximum batting points.

Nel made 96 in a last-wicket stand of 118 with Dernbach (56no) as Surrey, who began on 210-7, finished 386 all out.

Lee Daggett took 3-119, while Chaminda Vaas, skipper Andrew Hall and Nicky Boje all took two wickets each.

Northants increased their lead to 165 by the third day close, Niall O'Brien making 44 as they reached 154-4.

When Northants batted, Nel then also did well with the ball against his former county, taking the wickets of Stephen Peters and Rob White.

Mal Loye, who smashed 164 in his first innings, made it to just 20 this time before being trapped leg before by Chris Schofield.

But Hall and former captain Boje and Hall guided the hosts to the close, which came five overs early because of bad light.
