LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Hove: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Worcestershire 464, Sussex 188-4 Sussex 2pts, Worcs 5pts Match scorecard
Murray Goodwin scored the 61st first-class hundred of his career
Murray Goodwin's century helped Sussex fight back on day two against Worcestershire at Hove.
The visitors had earlier been put in charge by a sixth-wicket stand of 143 Ben Scott (98) and Shaaiq Choudhry (63) that helped them to 464 all out.
Sussex looked to be in trouble when they slumped to 13-2 in reply.
But Goodwin (109 not out) and Ed Joyce shared a third-wicket partnership of 169 to take Sussex to 183-4 at the close, 281 behind.
Scott, who is on loan from Middlesex, fell two runs short of his first century in two years, when he was run out by a direct hit from deep square leg by Chris Nash.
His was the last Worcestershire wicket to fall after he had received good support from debutant Choudhry and Gareth Andrew (21).
The impressive Richard Jones (3-59) then accounted for Sussex openers Michael Thornely and Nash, before Goodwin and Joyce set about rebuilding the innings.
Goodwin reached the 61st first-class hundred of his career from 110 balls, but lost Joyce when the Irishman edged left-arm spinner Choudhry to slip.
Nightwatchman Monty Panesar lasted six balls before becoming Jones's third victim, leaving Sussex captain Michael Yardy to accompany Goodwin to the close.
Worcestershire wicketkeeper Ben Scott told BBC Hereford & Worcester he was bitterly disappointed to run himself out for 98:
"I was gutted as it was very hard work out there, especially scoring runs off Monty Panesar who was bowling particularly well.
"He was bowling quite straight and it was difficult to work him around. But obviously when you are batting with the tail you have got to take a few risks and I came out on a bit of a loser there.
"It was my call and it was totally my fault really as I thought there were two there straight away and just turned, got halfway down and thought, 'I am going to have to dive here'.
"I was a bit ambitious with the dive but thought I got somewhere close but obviously not close enough."
