Worcestershire reached 302-6 on day one against Sussex, but may feel that they failed to capitalise on ideal batting conditions at Hove.

Phil Jacques (80) and Vikram Solanki (70) shared a second-wicket stand of 157, but when they fell the visitors slipped to 204-4.

Alex Kervezee (50) repaired the damage, with Ben Scott also chipping in with an unbeaten 24.

Corey Collymore (2-54) was the pick of the Sussex attack.

He enticed Daryl Mitchell to edge to Ed Joyce at third slip for just nine, but after that Jacques and Solanki took over.

Their 157-run stand came in just 34 overs before Jacques' dismissal, trapped lbw by Collymore, saw the visitors lose three wickets for 36 runs.

Dutchman Kervezee played aggressively to notch his half-century from 67 balls with 10 fours, but was caught behind off Monty Panesar to give Ben Brown his first Championship catch.

After Ben Smith, who laboured for over an hour for his 17, edged James Anyon to slip, it was left to Scott and Shaaiq Choudhry to negotiate 14 overs of the second new ball to take their side to stumps.

Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"Collymore was excellent and for a West Indian lad to bowl in conditions like that [was impressive] as he bowled like a traditional English seamer.

"He had good control and made the ball move around and we did well to get to lunch in the shape we were in.

"We were in great shape at 150-1 but I suppose we were going to lose wickets at some stage as the ball was moving around."
