LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Derby: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Gloucestershire 242 & 47-1, Derbyshire 345 Derbys 6pts, Glos 4pts Match scorecard
Chesney Hughes is playing in only his third first-class match |
Chesney Hughes hit his maiden first-class century and Chris Rogers also notched a ton as Derbyshire took the upper hand on Gloucestershire. The pair added 134 for the the fourth wicket, with captain Rogers, 49 not out overnight, moving to 115. Hughes hit 14 fours and a six before being ninth man out for 118 as Derbyshire were dismissed for 345, a lead of 103. Gloucestershire then lost Steve Snell in moving to 47-1 at the close. The game had been finely balanced at the start of the day with Derbyshire 171 behind, but Hughes and Rogers batted for most of the morning before the Derbyshire captain edged behind off Gemaal Hussain (3-65). At this point, Derbyshire were still trailing by 56, but 19-year-old Hughes, in only his third first-class match, batted with sound judgement to earn his side a lead despite left-arm spinner Vikram Banerjee (4-62) making his way through the hosts' lower order. He was well supported by Tim Groenewald (34 not out) and Tom Poynton (22) before eventually falling to a piece of cruel misfortune to become the ninth man out. Groenewald's drive was deflected onto the stumps at the non-striker's end by Jon Lewis when Hughes was short of his ground. Gloucestershire were left with 10 overs to bat out until the close, but lost Snell when he edged Greg Smith back onto his stumps.
