Rogers will be hoping his bowlers can force a final-day victory |
Derbyshire extended their first-innings lead over Northants to 260 before captain Chris Rogers declared on 480-5. Opening batsman Wayne Madsen reached his highest ever first-class score in moving from his overnight 163 to 179 before falling to Jack Brooks. Only 26 overs were possible in the morning, during which Derbyshire added 103 for the loss of three wickets. Northants openers Stephen Peters (10) and Vishal Tripathi (5) batted through just over eight overs before the close. The visitors began the day 157 runs ahead with Madsen and youngster Paul Borrington the overnight batsmen. It took Madsen only three overs to reach his previous best first-class high score of 170, made against Gloucestershire on his Derbyshire debut last July. But he made only nine more before he was caught at slip by Andrew Hall off the bowling of Brooks, having faced 344 balls and hit 17 fours and one six. Greg Smith - recently installed as Derbyshire's vice-captain - made just eight before he gloved James Middlebrook to Tripathi at short leg. Borrington reached a diligent half-century from 155 balls, but John Sadler made only 14 before he was bowled by Northants skipper Nicky Boje. Then came the rain, and Derbyshire declared their innings shortly before play restarted at 5.50pm, leaving Borrington unbeaten on 79 and former South Africa international Robin Peterson on 22.
