Glamorgan's Jim Allenby celebrates
Glamorgan all-rounder Jim Allenby celebrates trapping Worcestershire batsman Ben Smith leg before

David Harrison claimed a career-best 7-45 as Glamorgan bowled Worcestershire out for just 134 on the opening day at New Road.

Only Moeen Ali, who continued his impressive recent form with an unbeaten 85, offered any resistance as the home side crumbled after choosing to bat.

Harrison's haul beat the 5-48 he took against Somerset in Swansea in 2004.

Glamorgan reached 228-4 in reply by the close, with Ben Wright (71 no) and Jim Allenby (49 no) both going well.

And, with a lead of 94 already in the bank, Glamorgan already appear to be in a strong position to win the game.

Worcestershire's bad day at the office began as early as the fourth ball when Phil Jacques edged James Harris to Mark Wallace for his third successive Championship duck.

Fellow opener Daryl Mitchell followed shortly afterwards, caught at mid-off by Huw Waters off a leading edge, to give Harrison his first wicket.

Harrison then had home captain Vikram Solanki caught at second slip by Jamie Dalrymple, while Alexei Kervezee nicked Harris to Wallace.

Ben Smith was trapped leg before by Allenby's third ball, leaving Harrison to take the final five wickets - three of them lbw - and Moeen, who reached his half-century off 66 balls, high and dry.

It was the third successive time that the batsman had passed 50 in four-day cricket after hitting 126 and 70 not out in last week's game against Surrey.

Worcestershire had Glamorgan in a spot of bother in reply when Imran Arif had Mark Cosgrove caught in the deep by Jack Shantry and Mike Powell was bowled by Alan Richardson.

But Gareth Rees (42) and Wright steadied the ship before Wright and Allenby started building towards a sizeable first-innings lead.

BBC Hereford and Worcester reporter Dave Bradley reflects on day one:

Clearly Glamorgan's day and a lot of work for Worcestershire to do to get back into this game.

While David Harrison had the best of the conditions, he certainly used them to his advantage, getting some movement on a pitch that also seemed to offer uneven bounce at times.

Moeen Ali's innings was a class apart from the rest of the batting and, if he could only have found a partner to stay with him, Worcestershire's total would have been vastly improved.

While Harrison finished with a career-best, James Harris impressed with his early spell.

Worcestershire were then guilty of bowling too many 'four balls'. Despite taking Cosgrove somewhat fortuitously, they allowed Glamorgan to race along at five an over as Vikram Solanki tried to take wickets with an attacking field.

Wright and Allenby batted well in the evening sunshine, as a couple of sharp chances were put down, which could cost in what would appear to be a low-scoring game.
