LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Somerset 272 & 201-6, Yorkshire 419 (Yorkshire 7 pts, Somerset 4 pts) Match scorecard
Shahzad claimed the two late wickets of Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego |
An eighth-wicket stand of 111 between Adil Rashid and Ajmal Shahzad put Yorkshire in a position to win their game with Somerset at Headingley. Resuming on 320-7, Rashid made 63 and Shahzad 45 as Yorkshire were eventually bowled out for 419, a lead of 147. Paceman Shahzad then weighed in with two wickets as Somerset ended the day on 201-6, just 54 ahead. Arul Suppiah hit 71 but Somerset's main hopes of saving the game now rest with Zander de Bruyn, who is unbeaten on 49. The stand between Rashid and Shahzad was worth just 16 at the start of play and they resisted the temptation of going for quick runs to try and earn another bonus point in favour of building the lead up gradually. They were still together at lunch but Peter Trego made the breakthrough and polished off the Yorkshire innings by taking the final three wickets for one run from eight balls. But the home side soon made the breakthrough they wanted in Somerset's second innings, Tim Bresnan trapping visiting captain and first-innings centurion Marcus Trescothick leg before for 16. Suppiah enjoyed a couple of lives in being dropped by both Jacques Rudolph and Anthony McGrath, but saw Daniel Wainwright's leg spin account for Nick Compton and James Hildreth run out by a smart piece of fielding by Rashid. And his luck ran out with Somerset just seven behind when he was trapped lbw by Oliver Hannon-Dalby. Shahzad then returned to deliver a potentially telling double blow near the end, pinning Craig Kieswetter leg before and having Trego caught behind to leave Somerset with it all to do.
